Road #1: Forks of the Credit – The Escarpment Rollercoaster

You don’t need to ride for hours into the deep north to find a road with a real soul. Tucked just an hour northwest of the Toronto GTA gridlock lies a short, dramatic slice of asphalt that carves directly through the heart of the Niagara Escarpment: Forks of the Credit Road.

This road doesn’t just cut through the landscape; it follows the ancient, glacial path of the Credit River valley. As you turn off Highway 10, the flat Ontario farmland vanishes instantly. The road immediately drops you into a thick canopy of trees, rolling up and down over steep glacial hills before pinning you against the river. It’s short, sharp, and packs more personality into a few kilometers than most highways manage in a hundred.

The Anatomy of the Ride

1. The Devil’s Pulpit Drop

Starting from the east off Hwy 10, the road gives you a quick tease of sweeping bends before plunging down into the escarpment gorge. You’ll carve through a tight S-curve with rock faces on one side and a drop-off to the river on the other. It feels less like Southern Ontario and more like a mountain pass.

2. The Hairpin Switchback

The absolute crown jewel of the route. After crossing the narrow bridge over the Credit River, the road abruptly snaps into a massive, steep uphill hairpin turn. If you’re on a bike or in a low-slung ride, this requires proper gear selection and total focus—especially if you meet an oncoming car taking up the middle of the lane.

3. The Belfountain Pitstop

The road ends at a T-junction in the historic hamlet of Belfountain. Turn right, and you are immediately greeted by Higher Ground Co.—an absolute legendary weekend congregation spot for motorcyclists and car enthusiasts. Grab an espresso, pull up a seat, and talk shop. They even place plywood squares around the gravel and asphalt to keep your kickstand from sinking.

A Word to the Wise: Because this road is a masterpiece, it’s no secret. The local OPP (police) know it, the local residents know it, and speed bumps have been installed to keep the pace down. Respect the town zones, watch out for road cyclists, and save the aggressive lean angles for the track.
