🏁 Day 21: The Final Push – 1,230 Kilometers to Home
Day 21 wasn’t just the longest ride of the trip — it was the emotional crescendo to an epic cross-continent journey. From pre-dawn engine starts in Iowa to a triumphant return to Canadian soil, this day was a marathon on wheels — 1,230 kilometers of grit, joy, reflection, and final memories made.
The road wasn’t just a path today. It was closure.
🌅 Before Sunrise – Newton to the Midwest Horizon
We rolled out of Newton, Iowa before the first light broke the sky.
⛽ A quick stop at Phillips 66 had our tanks full and minds focused. The early hours passed in rhythm — flat plains, wind in our faces, and the group riding as one tight unit.
Passing by towns like Sam’s Lowe Wool Branch Rd SE, we felt the pull of home getting stronger with every mile.
🚛 Midday Stop – The World’s Largest Truckstop
📍 One of the day’s most unique stops: WQAD News 8 / The World’s Largest Truckstop on I-80.
A whirlwind of diesel, chrome, and activity — this wasn’t just a gas-and-go. It was a celebration of life on the road. A place where travelers, truckers, and riders all intersect. We stretched our legs, snapped a few photos, and carried on with renewed energy.
🛣️ Eastbound Grind – Michigan in Sight
We kept chewing up the miles as the day stretched on, each stop more focused than the last:
🛏️ A breather at Remedy by Wyndham – Michigan City, IN gave us a much-needed moment to reset
⛽ A fill-up at Speedway
🛍️ Last-minute U.S. provisions at Meijer — snacks, water, and maybe a small souvenir or two
🌉 The Crossing – Canada at Last
Then, it happened.
📍 The Ambassador Bridge Duty Free – Detroit sign came into view.
The crossing into Canada was more than symbolic — it was emotional. After weeks on the road, we rolled across the Ambassador Bridge, the Detroit River beneath us, and the skyline of Windsor waiting on the other side.
🇨🇦 The welcome from Canada Border Services Agency – Windsor was smooth and quick — a few nods, a few smiles, and just like that, we were back on home turf.
🍁 Familiar Roads & Final Stops
Crossing into Ontario didn’t mean the ride was over — but the landscape felt different now. Familiar towns, familiar road signs, and that unmistakable feeling of home.
📍 We passed through Tilbury North, soaking in every final kilometer
☕ Of course, we had to stop at Tim Hortons — nothing says “welcome back to Canada” like a steeped tea and a chocolate dip donut
🏡 Arrival in Huron County – The Journey Ends
We rolled into Huron County as the sun began to dip, bringing our engines to rest for the final time. It was done. From west to east, deserts to mountains, truckstops to border crossings — the journey had come full circle.
There were no parades, no flags waving — just quiet celebration among friends who had ridden farther, harder, and deeper than most ever will.
