🏔️ Day 19: Climbing Into the Clouds – Colorado’s High Country
Day 19 was all about altitude and attitude. We left behind the red rock canyons of Grand Junction and climbed straight into the heart of the Rockies — a route packed with dramatic mountain roads, alpine towns, and sweeping overlooks that made every kilometer feel like a postcard. This was a ride for the books: 460 km of two-wheeled bliss through Colorado’s most breathtaking terrain.
🏍️ Morning Kickoff – Bikes, Fuel, and Mountain Air
We began our day with a fitting stop at Teddy Morse’s Grand Junction Harley-Davidson — a must for any rider passing through. A quick look at the local machines, some merch hunting, and we were rolling again.
⛽ Next stop: Maverik Adventure’s First Stop — the perfect place to top off both tanks and snacks before climbing into high-altitude country.
🌲 Into the Rockies – The Ascent Begins
As we began our ascent, the scenery changed fast.
The rust-colored desert faded into deep greens and snow-capped peaks. Every turn delivered a new panorama — towering pine forests, dramatic ridgelines, and that crisp mountain air you can feel in your lungs.
📍 Crazy Horse Cir Viewpoint — somewhere near 1002 Crazy Horse Circle, we made a quick stop to soak in the view. A quiet moment amid towering peaks, and one of those “remember this forever” kind of spots.
🎿 Vail Village – Summer in a Ski Town
One of today’s highlights was rolling into the legendary Vail Ski Resort.
Even in summer, Vail Village had that cozy alpine charm — cobblestone streets, quaint cafes, and lush green mountainsides.
☕ We grabbed coffee at Yeti’s Grind at Solaris, where espresso met elevation in the best way possible.
🌊 Lakes & Overlooks – Picture-Perfect Colorado
As we continued east, the road offered up some of the best views of the entire trip.
📸 Dillon Dam Overlook — a shimmering lake surrounded by alpine peaks. You could hear helmets clicking open as everyone stopped to take it all in.
📍 Georgetown Overlook Pull-Out gave us yet another reminder of how massive and majestic the Rockies really are.
🏞️ Out of the Mountains, Into the Plains
By late afternoon, the peaks began to shrink behind us, and the terrain slowly transitioned into the rolling plains of eastern Colorado.
⛽ A final fuel stop at Phillips 66 let us regroup before the final stretch into Denver’s outskirts.
🏡 Evening Arrival – Commerce City
We cruised into Commerce City as the light began to soften, wrapping up one of the most thrilling riding days so far. The Rockies left their mark — on our tires, in our muscles, and deep in our memories.
