Day 4 – Missouri Magic: Caves, Murals, and Mother Road Mystique

Distance covered by motorcycle: ~351 km
Route: St. Louis, MO → Sullivan → Cuba → Lebanon → Springfield, MO

By now, the group had hit their stride — full throttle in both spirit and machine. Day 4 took us deep into the soul of Missouri’s Route 66: roadside oddities, ancient caves, smoked BBQ, and nostalgic roadside Americana.

Fuel First: Coffee in Pacific, MO

The ride began just after sunrise from St. Louis. The first stop: Little Ireland Coffee in Pacific, MO — a cozy gem offering espresso, breakfast sandwiches, and a quiet moment to plan the ride ahead.

🦇 Into the Earth – Meramec Caverns

One of the most iconic attractions on Route 66, the Meramec Caverns near Sullivan offered a stunning underground experience. Jesse James himself was rumored to have hidden in these limestone caves. It’s one of those “can’t skip” stops, and it gave us a literal cool break from the growing heat outside.

🎨 Street Art & Smoke: Cuba, Missouri

Next stop: Murals of Cuba, a Route 66 town known as “Mural City.” The hand-painted art scattered across downtown tells stories of Route 66, veterans, and Americana legends.
For lunch, we devoured smoky ribs and brisket at Missouri Hick Barbeque, a log cabin-style joint famous for its hickory-smoked meats.

🤪 Only on Route 66: Uranus Fudge Factory

Yes, it’s called Uranus — and yes, the puns are nonstop. From a huge green alien to corny billboards, this stop near St. Robert, MO is pure kitsch. Inside? A wild gift shop, homemade fudge (try the peanut butter!), and laughs all around. It’s roadside America in all its glorious weirdness.

🏛️ Route 66 Museum – Lebanon, MO

The day continued with a visit to the Route 66 Museum in Lebanon. Free to visit, it featured recreated 1950s-era rooms, classic cars, gas pumps, and stories that captured the essence of the Mother Road.

🛻 Springfield Bound – Home of Route 66 Birthplace

Arriving in Springfield, Missouri, the “Birthplace of Route 66,” was a meaningful marker. We cruised through downtown, stopped by TLG Peterbilt for a quick truck check-in, then parked for the night around Commercial Street, the city’s historic heart.

A supply run to Price Cutter grocery store wrapped up the evening — and yes, snacks were key. It had been a full day of oddities, legends, and that undeniable Route 66 magic.
